The Fuzzy Threshold Problem

this one is for all you Cake fans

“adjectives on the typewriter”
my ipod defined my gait
the world around me fictionalized
into a soundtracked version of itself

i noticed you walk
first beside me, then behind me
as if to remind me
to keep the pace

we stood in line,
contemplating the ironic:
which junk food was healthiest?
temptations battling responsibility

i looked at you
for the first time, proper
wasn’t sure if i
caught you catching a glance, or
caught my mind wishing you did

we walked along, expressing requests
for gastronomic fulfillment
i looked at you, another once
to work out the utility of
the potential embarrassment,
was it equal or above the gain
from a charming co-customer chat?

as i walked away
i retraced my steps
contemplating regret
an error maybe, in the mental math, was it,
or just a weakness of the heart?
